PUBLIC TRANSIT

3-7 hours
30 pax
No AC

pros
-
Lowest price
cons
-
Complicated process
-
Slow (1-hour transit to the main terminal + up to 4 hours wait time + 2 hours driving to Jaco)
-
No air conditioning (hot)
-
Fixed schedule
-
Bus makes many stops along the way
description
Public transit is the most affordable option from San José to Jaco, costing just $6 per person.
However, this low price comes with significant drawbacks, including a long, slow, and rigid process.

First, you’ll need to take a city bus or taxi from the airport to the main terminal in downtown San José, which can take over an hour without traffic. From there, you'll catch a "Transportes Jaco" bus to Jaco, but be prepared for wait times ranging from 0 to 4 hours, depending on your arrival time. Note that the last bus departs at 7 PM.

If you're willing to endure a potentially 7-hour journey with plenty of waiting, keep in mind that the bus lacks AC, toilets, and does not make unscheduled stops.

AIRPORT HUSTLER

$100-$140/ride + surcharge
24/7
1.5 - 2 hours
1-4 pax
Often no

pros
-
Possible lower price
-
Readily available at the airport
cons
-
Usually demands extra fare
-
Operate illegally
-
Often has no insurance or license
-
Unknown and untrusted drivers
-
Risky and possibly dangerous
description
An airport hustler is exactly what it sounds like: a person who lurks at the airport, preying on unsuspecting travelers to offer unauthorized rides. These individuals often operate illegally, without proper licenses or insurance, putting you at risk.

Expect them to use a variety of deceptive tactics, such as aggressively approaching you, loading your bags into their car without your consent, or holding a sign with your name (stolen from your legitimate shuttle's sign). They may even try to convince you that your ride isn’t coming and that they've been sent to pick you up instead. These drivers are unvetted, untrustworthy, and unknown to any legitimate service.

Since they operate outside the law, you're fully responsible for any medical costs if an accident occurs. They don't carry insurance, leaving you on your own in case of an emergency.

For payment, these hustlers only accept cash and are known to demand more money once you’re on a quiet back road, making it even harder to escape their tactics.
how to book
While we always advise against this mode of transportation, if you choose to use this service you can do so directly outside the main exit of the arrivals terminal.
UBER / TAXI

$130-$180/ride
24/7
1.5 - 2 hours
1-4 pax
Sometimes, but usually no

pros
-
Similar price to Professional Shuttle (Uber)
-
Readily available at the airport (taxi only)
-
Good option if you forgot to book a ride
-
No, or inconsequential cancellation policy
cons
-
Uber is illegal in Costa Rica
-
Uber is not permitted on Airport property
-
May demand extra fare
-
Many drivers illegally share one Uber profile
-
Often small, cramped cars with little to no trunk or AC
-
Uber drivers may not have licenses or insurance
-
Likely much higher price (taxi)
description
In North America, Uber is trusted by most, drivers are vetted, and safety features are in place in the event of an emergency, etc. Not here. You’re in the jungle!

In Costa Rica, it’s common for one Uber driver to share their vetted profile with many of their friends, meaning anyone could be driving you. In other words, the driver shown on your app won’t necessarily match the person who picks you up—this is a problem. It means that your driver likely lacks a license, insurance, and proper driving education. It’s the same as hiring the airport hustler described above.

Because Uber is currently illegal in Costa Rica, Uber drivers aren’t permitted on airport property. So, if you want to catch one, you’ll have to walk your bags down the road until you’re off the airport’s property.

Taxis are legal and will be available at the airport. There is a slightly higher level of safety with a taxi driver but their cars are often old, and small, and taxi fare is known to be quite expensive, sometimes even double that of an Uber!
how to book
Taxis can be found directly outside the main exit of the arrivals terminal. If it's an Uber you're after, you can use your Uber app and meet the driver off of the airport property.
